What is mass tourism: main features
Mass tourism is nothing more than a phenomenon that occurs in some tourist places that find demand much greater than their capacity to offer services and products. But not only that. It also refers to the impact that is generated on the local population by the precariousness of available resources.
According to a study promoted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in partnership with some universities, mass tourism corresponds to “(…) the impact of tourism on a destination, or on parts of it, which excessively negatively influences the perception of quality of citizens' lives and/or the quality of visitor experiences”.
Consider, for example, cities that encounter tourist demand that exceeds their physical, social, economic and ecological capacities. Note that this leads to a decrease in the quality of life of those who live there, as well as can interfere with the tourist's own benefit.
When a location or part of it is faced with this type of situation, it tends to see its products become more expensive, since there is greater demand than those available. It also finds environmental impacts, such as a decrease in water and air quality, as well as an increase in waste production.
See, then, the main characteristics of what mass tourism is:
- Conventional tourism, which is consolidated before the public and tends to attract more and more people;
- Seasonal, so that demand increases during specific periods, such as peak seasons. In this case, mass tourism on the Brazilian coast occurs between December and February, annually, for example;
- Passive, so that the place becomes naturally touristy and one of the few options that many tourists turn to.
What drives the development of mass tourism in a location?
There are some factors that are repeated when we study how a place became a mass tourist destination, see the main ones:
- Overload of few destinations (access of many people to few places);
- Irresponsible tourism, where there is a lack of local enforcement and necessary policing, as well as specific tourist rules, as well as the behavior of tourists is negative and disrespectful;
- Vacation rentals, where houses and apartments available through services like AirBnb can overcrowd even more residential neighborhoods or where hotels are already present;
- Stops of large Cruises, which recurrently increases the number of tourists there;
- Viralization of destinations through social networks, increasing demand overnight, without the necessary and indispensable prior preparation.
What are the effects of mass tourism?
Still, to understand what mass tourism is and how it affects tourist destinations, it is essential to consider the effects it causes. See the main ones:
- Ecological damage (increase in waste production, irresponsible use of natural resources, increase in water, air and noise pollution);
- Increased stress due to the increase in queues in establishments and the emergence of huge congestion;
- Soaring prices due to increased purchase demand without sufficient products;
- Decreased quality of life for local residents;
- Increased violence or feelings of helplessness.
